These replacement primary mirror collimation springs are significantly stronger than the factory-installed springs provided on GSO-manufactured scopes, and will help your primary mirror stay collimated longer. The are stainless steel with closed and ground ends so that the face of the springs are parallel to the back of the mirror cell, allowing for smooth, stable collimation.

Getting your Dobsonian Telescope's base level is important when using an object location system like a built-in Setting Circle, or a computerized system like Orion's Intelliscope.  And even if you don't use an object location system, setting your base level will make it more stable and prevent it from rotating in azimuth due to gravity.

These custom leveling feet are made from heavy-duty 8 gauge steel, with 3/4" tall threaded nuts welded to the brackets, for durability and stability.  The leveling bolts have approximately 2 1/2" of travel making it easy to get your base level on rough or sloped terrain.  The comfortable 5-lobe knobs makes adjustment quick and easy, and the large 1.5" diameter feet have a knobby, non-slip rubber insert in the bottom, ensuring that the base will stay where you put it, and won't scratch hardwood floors when stored indoors.

High Performance Optics Demand a High Precision Focuser

Exploring the fine features around the Moon's Hadley Rille will put to test observing skills of any astronomer as well as precision of telescope optics. Better optical quality dictates more precise focusing.

This is especially true when observing at high magnification or when making CCD images. With a standard focuser, you will find that a tiny nudge will throw out focus and turn your night into one of frustration.

So we included as standard equipment, on all Explore ScientificED Apos, a ten-to-one, two-speed Crayford-style precision focuser with tension adjustment and lock to obtain and hold perfect focus. We think you'll agree that such precision is worth it.

Optical Alignment

One of the bonuses of ownership of a refractor is that, compared to standard reflector telescopes, they almost never require re-aligning of the optics (collimation). However, any telescope that is subjected to shock may require optical alignment.

Removing the dew shield, you can access the alignment screws, which you can adjust yourself by referring to the instructions. You can also send it to Explore Scientific’s Service Center for alignment. A standard service charge applies.

Viewing Comfort and the Preservation of Precious Light

The purpose of a diagonal is to securely hold your eyepiece and to give you a comfortable viewing angle.

Provided as standard equipment, Explore Scientific's Two Inch Dielectric Diagonal incorporates a light-weight, one-piece diagonal body that securely cradles the precision polished diagonal flat mirror, insuring precision alignment. Ultra-high reflective coatings (99% reflective) composed of multiple thin layers of dielectric material delivers maximum light output.

Both 2" and 1.25" eyepiece holders use compression rings instead of a simple set-screw to more securely hold your valued eyepiece (or imaging device) and to minimize scoring of eyepiece barrels. You can thread standard 48mm filters into the barrel.

Universal Mounting Plate

The Universal Adjustable Mounting Plate of the ED 127 fits on mounts supplied by Explore Scientific, Vixen, and Meade LXD55/75. It also attaches to photo tripods with standard USA or European thread attaching knobs.

High Performance Optics Demand a High Precision Focuser

Exploring the fine features around the Moon's Hadley Rille will put to test observing skills of any astronomer as well as precision of telescope optics. Better optical quality dictates more precise focusing.

This is especially true when observing at high magnification or when making CCD images. With a standard focuser, you will find that a tiny nudge will throw out focus and turn your night into one of frustration.

So we included as standard equipment, on all Explore ScientificED Apos, a ten-to-one, two-speed Crayford-style precision focuser with tension adjustment and lock to obtain and hold perfect focus. We think you'll agree that such precision is worth it.

Optical Alignment

One of the bonuses of ownership of a refractor is that, compared to standard reflector telescopes, they almost never require re-aligning of the optics (collimation). However, any telescope that is subjected to shock may require optical alignment.

Removing the dew shield, you can access the alignment screws, which you can adjust yourself by referring to the instructions. You can also send it to Explore Scientific’s Service Center for alignment. A standard service charge applies.

We Keep You from Getting Lost in the Dark!

Many premium small refractors don't include some basic accessories like a viewfinder. This is often done to keep prices down. Those manufacturers rationalize that its owner simply will not need a viewfinder... wrong!

While it's true that ED Apos in this aperture usually have short focal lengths, it still is a challenge to successfully aim the telescope without a viewfinder. So we decided to offer a superior class 8x50 viewfinder as standard equipment.

The Explore Scientific 8x50 produces a wide 6° field of view and allows precision focus of both main objective and eyepiece illuminated reticle. A precision polished roof prism produces images that are right-side-up, left-to-right correct. In other words, things are not upside-down and backwards like most viewfinders. Our illuminated reticle is truly designed for finding objects with its open center (so you don't mask the object you are centering with cross hairs) and scale markings for 1.5°, 3°, and 4.5° (the edge of the field of view is the 6° boundary).

The 55° apparent field, long eye-relief eyepiece produces a bright 15.5mm exit pupil and will allow you to find faint galaxies, comets, and nebulae. All optics are fully-multicoated to insure maximum contrast.

Carbon Fiber Tube and Cradle Rings with Handle

Although it cost more, we chose carbon fiber for the telescope tube and dew shield for its high strength-to-weight ratio and its low expansion characteristics when subjected to temperature variations. This helps to keep the instrument light in weight and keeps the instrument focused even if the temperature drops.

Even though this telescope uses a carbon fiber tube making it much lighter, we supply a handle to easily grip the telescope for mounting and placing it back in its case. In addition we slot the handle to accept a standard 1/4x20 bolt to attach a camera.

Universal Mounting Plate

The Universal Adjustable Mounting Plate of the ED 127 fits on mounts supplied by Explore Scientific, Vixen, and Meade LXD55/75. It also attaches to photo tripods with standard USA or European thread attaching knobs.

You can mount the ED 127 to many popular equatorial and Altaz mounts, including Explore Scientific mounts.

Explore Scientific David H. Levy Comet Hunter Reflector Telescope

Developing a telescope with comet discoverer David Levy, was a dream come true.

Levy has spent a lifetime advising people to help them find their first serious telescope, and inspiring people of all ages to look at the stars through his comet discoveries, his writings, and his lectures. His dream to show people the beauty of the night sky has culminated in the formation of a non-profit organization devoted to outreach in astronomy, called the Sharing the Sky Foundation.

Explore Scientific shares David's dream, and we wanted to help. So we embarked on a project to co-design a telescope with Levy that could be perfect for beginner and expert alike. In addition we decided to provide the Sharing the Sky Foundation a portion of the sales of each telescope.

Called the David H. Levy Comet Hunter™, the instrument is a rich field telescope (RFT), capable of showing faint objects over a wide field of view (generally two degrees or more).

Our challenge was to design a portable instrument that has enough aperture to observe the broad range of celestial objects with an optimized optical design to serve as a true RFT that can also work well for high magnification observations of planets. We also wanted the telescope to serve as a serious optical solution for astroimaging. In short, we wanted a telescope that could do almost anything; a telescope that would be perfect for beginners to advanced astronomers alike.

To match the performance of the main instrument itself, we chose deluxe accessories as standard equipment.

Producing a bright right-side-up, left-to-right correct image, the 8x50 Correct-Image Illuminated Finder Scope has a precision glass-etched illuminated reticle of the has a cross-hair to mark the field boundaries and an open circle in the middle so that stars can be perfectly centered without being covered.

The Comet Hunter comes standard with a two-inch, two-speed focuser, and a 30mm focal length eyepiece with a wide 70° apparent field. This eyepiece combined with the short focal length of the telescope produce an amazing 2.86° true field of view with a 6.2mm exit pupil.

Sometimes called visual equalization magnfication, using the right low power eyepiece eyepiece will produce an exit pupil that nearly matches the fully dialated eye. This allows you to see to the faintest observable limit of the telescope's aperture, which is critical for searching for faint objects such as distant comets.

When you design and manufacture a telescope, there are lots of ways that you can attempt to reduce cost in order to hit a desired price point. While we do our best to keep prices reasonable, our philosophy is that we should make every Explore Scientific telescope perform for the astronomer and for everyone that the instrument is shared with.

The dew shield of the Comet Hunter is removeable, but can be left on all the time since the metal dust cover fits on the dew shield or on the optical tube assembly alone.

No matter what your observing environment is like, a dew shield serves to protect. It protects against dew forming on the corrector plate (which will make the stars slowly vanish), it protects the mirrors from stray light which will reduce contrast, and it also can provide physical protection to the corrector plate.

We understand that the aquisition of a precision instrument represents an important investment to its owner. That is why every Comet Hunter is supplied with heavy-duty, custom-cut, foam lined instrument case. The case uses four butterfly latches so that the lid can be complete removed for easy access to the items inside. The bottom of the case has rubber feet to lift the case off the ground to keep the case clean and dry.

Meade #928 45° Image Erecting Prism

Meade refracting telescope models (like all refractors) normally produce an image that is reversed or "inverted" due to the inherent nature of the lenses used in their optical configuration. This left to right mirror reversal of the image poses no problem for astronomy, however in terrestrial observing a corrected image is highly desirable which is where this useful accessory comes in.

For observing wildlife, a home with a view, or other Earthly applications the Meade 928 Erecting Prism results in an image which is both right side up and corrected left to right. It also provides a comfortable 45° observing angle which is more convenient for daytime use.

For all Meade refractors with 1.25" focusers including 70AZ, DS-2080 and DS-2090, and LXD75 AR5 and AR-6. May also be used with LX90, LX200 or other Schmidt-Cassegrain or Advanced Coma Free models with a 1.25" eyepiece holder. Note: not compatible with ETX models.

Meade 62 T-Adapter with SCT thread for SCT model telescopes

Compatible with all Meade LS, LX90 and LX200 models including ACF and older Schmidt-Cassagrain designs which have a standard Schmit-Cassegrain type rear cell thread.

The #62 T-Adapter threads to the rear cell of the telescope directly without use of an eyepiece holder. Output is a standard photographic T-thread (male) to which many imaging devices including the Meade DSI will thread directly. Meade Basic Camera Adapter (1.25")

The Basic Camera Adapter (1.25") accepts an eyepiece that will project an enlarged image to the camera or imager such as a Meade DSI. A 1.25" eyepiece is typically inserted into the body of the Basic Camera Adapter, typically in the 15mm to 32mm focal length range. The machined sliding-cell assembly can be fixed at any position along its length and is held in position with 2 thumbscrews. The resulting effective focal ratio is then determined by the adjustment and eyepiece used.

For digital or film SLR type cameras a T-Mount is additionally required, ordered separately for your camera brand. The Basic Camera Adapter permits a rigid coupling of the camera to any telescope with a 1.25" eyepiece holder. The T-mount threads onto the universal threads of the T-Adapter on one side and has the bayonet-mount unique to the user's brand of 35mm camera on the other side. In this way the camera body is rigidly coupled to the telescope's optical system, which in effect becomes the camera's lens.

Celestron’s SkyProdigy telescopes use an integrated imaging camera and patented StarSense Technology to automatically align with the night sky and determine where the telescope is currently pointing. The camera automatically captures an image of the sky, which is processed internally to positively identify the stars in the image. Once a positive match is found, SkyProdigy determines the coordinates of the center of the captured image. The process is automatically repeated two more times so that the system has three known alignment points that can be used to make an accurate model of the night sky. From this information the user can select any celestial object in the hand controller’s database, and SkyProdigy will automatically move itself to the correct position.

Celestron’s SkyProdigy telescopes use an integrated imaging camera and patented StarSense Technology to automatically align with the night sky and determine where the telescope is currently pointing. The camera automatically captures an image of the sky, which is processed internally to positively identify the stars in the image. Once a positive match is found, SkyProdigy determines the coordinates of the center of the captured image. The process is automatically repeated two more times so that the system has three known alignment points that can be used to make an accurate model of the night sky. From this information the user can select any celestial object in the hand controller’s database, and SkyProdigy will automatically move itself to the correct position.

⁺The SkyProdigy’s internal camera does not have an external output allowing users to view or save the captured images. The captured images are used internally solely for the purpose of self-aligning the SkyProdigy telescope.

Intelligent Design
Powered by 8 AA (user supplied) batteries or an optional AC adapter (#18778), these NexStar GoTos love to travel.  The internal battery compartment provides power to the high precision servo motors for rigid low-vibration performance while eliminating cord wrap issues associated with external battery packs.

Celestron’s Revolutionary SkyAlign

Using Celestron’s patented SkyAlign (patent pending), simply input the date, time and location into the hand control then slew the telescope to any three bright celestial objects in the sky.  You do not need to know the names of the stars – you can even pick the Moon or bright planets!

Celestron's Moon Filter is an economical eyepiece filter for reducing the brightness of the moon and improving contrast, so greater detail can be observed on the lunar surface. The clear aperture is 21mm and the transmission is about 18%.

Each filter has an ultra hard, vacuum-deposited coating carefully designed to block all of the visual spectrum ranging from 400 to 700 nm This eliminates the unnatural colored halos surrounding bright stars common with O III filters of less sophisticated coating technology.

The secondary mirror of any Dobsonian telescope will occasionally need to be adjusted in a process known as collimation, and our Apertura Dobsonian telescopes come standard with Phillips-head screws for collimating the secondary mirror (as do most Dobsonians by Zhumell, Orion, Meade, Celestron, etc.). The Collimation Thumbscrews eliminate the need for a Phillip’s head screwdriver to collimate the secondary mirror (which means you don’t have to worry about dropping a screwdriver on your beautiful new primary mirror!). These black, fully threaded screws replace the recessed factory screws and extend the grip-point with a 1/2 inch diameter head to allow you to quickly and easily adjust the secondary mirror during collimation. The secondary mirror is suspended on thin metal spider-vanes which can flex under the pressure of a screwdriver, but with these thumbscrew knobs you can use a more precise, lighter touch during alignment, increasing the accuracy of the collimation. Our thumbscrews have metric M4 threads to fit our Apertura scopes, but will also fit many other popular Dobsonian telescopes by Zhumell, Hardin Optical, GSO, Meade and Celestron (but be sure to check your threads with an M4 metric screw before ordering).

For the secondary mirror, the standard back plate for the collimation screws on most Dobsonian telescopes is metal. The collimating screws press against this plate to move it during collimation and to hold it in place. Over time the metal plate is often gouged by the screws, creating divots that hinder the accuracy of collimation. The UHMW-PE Washers sit on top of the metal plate and, with a high resistance to wear-and-tear, prevent these divots ensuring higher accuracy of collimation even after years of use.

When you use a basic Dobsonian telescope, you generally move it around during viewing by simply pushing or pulling on the main tube. That method works fine, but many experienced astronomers add a nice little knob to their Optical tubes so that they have an easy, comfortable way to guide their telescope around the sky. This Soft-Grip guide knob has a rubberized handle which is much more comfortable on those chilly nights when holding the metal telescope itself isn’t your first choice.

Installation instructions:

You will need to drill a 1/4" hole in the side of your Dobsonian's Optical tube. The exact location of the hole is a matter of personal preference, but we generally recommend you drill the hole about 2" from the end of the tube, and about 2.5" from the seam on the underside of the Optical tube (on the side of the seam closest to you when seated at the eyepiece). Be sure to point the open end of the telescope down towards the ground while drilling the hole to ensure that all metal bits fall out of the scope and not on the mirror. It is also a good idea to remove the grey metal ring from the end of the scope first (by removing 6 phillips head screws) so that metal filings don't get caught under that ring and later fall on the mirror.  Once you've drilled the 1/4" hole, simply feed the included bolt through the hole from inside the Optical tube and then thread the knob onto the bolt and tighten.

The common four-hole accessory tray that comes standard with your Apertura^TM Dobsonian Telescopes as well as most Dob scopes is a nice feature for a beginning astronomer. But that standard tray has only one 2” diameter hole and three 1.25” diameter holes, and most astronomers quickly find themselves running out of places to put their growing collection of eyepieces, adapters, collimators, etc. This additional, accessory 5-Hole Eyepiece Tray has THREE 2” diameter holes plus two 1.25” holes. So with the standard tray plus the upgrade tray, you will have plenty of room to store your favorite eyepieces, a collimator, plus a a nice assortment of other accessories while observing.

The Telrad sight is a non-magnifying sight to make star-hopping fun and easy. After a simple alignment process to ensure that it is perfectly lined up with your telescope and finderscope, the Telrad's intuitive "heads-up-display" of a lighted red reticle allows you to simply look through the glass window to see what the telescope is looking at.When you point the Telrad at any object in the night sky (for example, a prominent star like Polaris or Vega) you know the telescope's eyepiece will be centered on that same object.

Then as you explore the sky you can use the Telrad to help you find fainter Deep Sky Objects by referring to star charts that include the Telrad reticle printed to scale. The outer circle in the lighted red reticle covers 4 degrees of the sky, the middle circle covers 2 degrees, and the small inner circle covers 1/2 degree. And the built-in variable switch allows you to easily reduce the brightness of the projected reticle when looking at fainter stars or increase brightness for brighter objects.
